Dear Friends,

BE A HELPER!

This year especially, my kids and I have been talking a lot about helpers. With so much hardship in the news, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless. We are devastated by tragic events, and we want to tune them out. But as Fred Rogers once famously said, we must "look for the helpers." We must focus on those who lift each other up in times of crisis, and we feel comforted by those who care. As Jews, we want to be helpers. We do what we can to try to repair the world.

I'm writing to ask for your help now. Please consider donating blood at the Congregation Beth Jacob blood drive. Giving blood is a mitzvah that can save up to three lives.

WHY DONATE?

• Someone in the US needs blood every two seconds - more than 41,000 units every day

• Only 10% of the US population donates annually

• More than 1.6 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood transfusions during their chemotherapy treatment.

• A single car accident victim may need as many as 100 units of blood

• If all blood donors gave three times a year, there would be no shortages

• The #1 reason blood donors say they give is because they "want to help others”

The blood drive has personal meaning to me. My father passed away in 2009 from multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. Throughout his treatment, he received several blood transfusions that not only prolonged his life, but gave him a good quality of life for 5 years. He traveled all over the world with my mom, and was able to keep up with his young grandchildren, which, if you know my kids, is saying a lot!

I am so grateful for your support.

We hope to see you on December 7th.

With gratitude,

Karen Orzechowski
