Erev Tisha B'av Services

Saturday, August 2, 2025 8 Av 5785

8:00 PM - 9:30 PMCongregation Beth Jacob

"Hashiveinu Adonai Elecha...Bring us back, God, and we will return. Renew our days as of old."

Tisha B'av (The Ninth of Av) is a day of mourning and fasting. The holiday commemorates various tragedies that befell the Jewish people throughout history, particularly the destruction of the two temples in 586 BCE and 70 CE.

We chant the Scroll of Lamentations, Megillat Eicha, to a haunting musical pattern. Eicha chronicles the tragic destruction of Jerusalem, yet ends with hopeful verses. Readers chant through the 5 chapters in turn, our many voices rising in remembrance. Yet, we find hope in sitting together.

To participate by chanting a verse of Eicha, please contact Cantor Barbara. Contact: Cantor Barbara Email: barbarapowell@bethjacobrwc.org

There will be thoughts shared by area rabbis between 8:00 – 8:30 pm, followed by Evening service, Havdalah, and chanting of Eicha.

Honoring different observant levels in our community: please note that for those for whom Shabbat does not end until 9:15 – there will be an evening service and reading of Eicha at Peninsula Sinai Congregation in Foster City at 9:15.
