Alon Tal – Confronting Israel’s Environmental Challenges in Times of War: A Regional Response to Climate Change

Dr. Tal’s career combines academic pursuits with public interest advocacy. He is a visiting professor at Stanford University, completing a book on Israeli overpopulation. He also served as a co-chairman of Israel’s Green Party and a member of the Israeli Knesset.
Dr. Tal, a prominent environmentalist, founded Adam Teva V’din, a leading public interest law group, from 1990 to 1997. He also chaired Life and Environment, an umbrella organization for eighty environmental organizations in Israel, from 1998 to 2003. Currently, he serves on the international board of directors of the Jewish National Fund, chairing both land development and sustainable development committees.
In 1996, Dr. Tal established the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, an interdisciplinary graduate studies center that brings together Israeli, Jordanian, Palestinian, and global environmentalists.
Dr. Tal’s academic career has seen faculty appointments at prestigious universities worldwide. In 2006, he received the prestigious Charles Bronfman humanitarian prize for his environmental leadership. In 2008, at age 48, he was awarded a life achievement award by Israel’s Ministry of Environment.
Dr. Tal, an accomplished academic, has authored over a hundred articles and six books, including “All the Trees for the Forest – Israel’s Woodlands from the Bible to the Present” (2006). He holds degrees in political science, economics, and law, and completed his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Environmental Health Policy from Harvard.
Outside of academia, Dr. Tal is married with three daughters and enjoys long-distance running, tennis, and playing the bluegrass fiddle.
