All DayGilah Abelson and husband Mark have been members of CBJ for 44 years (she was confirmed by Rabbi Teitelbaum and Cantor Cohn!). She has been an active member of the committee that plans the annual Yom HaShoah commemoration for the North Peninsula since 2000. Upon hearing that the family who saved the mother of her dear friend was being honored in Belgium, she knew she wanted to be there. In June of 2022, Gilah had the privilege of traveling to Sprimont, Belgium where the most remarkable ceremony honoring the Dequesne family took place. Gilah will speak about her experience of this ceremony in Belgium, along with Nancy and Alan Zorfas, who are members of Peninsula Sinai Congregation. Nancy’s mother, Mona Ginsberg, was born in Vienna, Austria in 1933, and fled to Belgium in 1938 soon after Kristallnacht. Mona returned to Belgium in June of 2022 to honor the descendants of the family that hid her in their home from 1942 to 1945. Bernard Duquesne accepted the title of "Righteous Among the Nations" bestowed upon him by the Israeli government on behalf of his mother and grandmother.
