CBJ Clergy and Leadership

Dear CBJ Family,

Soon after concluding our beautiful Shabbat services yesterday, we learned of the horrific synagogue attack and hostage situation in at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas. We breathed a collective sigh of relief to learn that the hostages, including Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker were freed due to the heroic actions of law enforcement. Rabbi Cytron-Walker wrote a beautiful statement following his release: “I am grateful for my family. I am grateful for the CBI Community, the Jewish community, the human Community. I am grateful that we made it out. I am grateful to be alive.” We share this gratitude.

After incidents like this, we stand together to support one another. This news highlights the rise of antisemitism and brings back painful memories of past shootings and attacks directed at Jews and Jewish institutions. It is painful! We should be able to pray in our synagogues free of fear – yet violent hatred persists.

Please be assured that our Redwood City leadership and police have reached out and have increased patrols of our synagogue. Community members from other faiths have reached out to share solidarity and comfort. President Biden wrote a letter to the Jewish community expressing sharing love and strength. Prime Minister Bennet of Israel shared solidarity with the American Jewish community saying: “You are not alone. We are one family and we stand strong and united together.” This broad solidarity brings comfort and strength. We will continue to focus on creating vibrant connections to our Jewish life as we comfort one another and find strength.

We remain vigilant in our security measures and continue to seek to have the highest standards when it comes to protecting our facility and all who come to it.

At times like this, concrete actions are helpful. Please consider one of these options:

Donate to the synagogue - Congregation Beth Israel https://www.congregationbethisrael.org/payment.php

Write a note of support on CBI’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CBIColleyvilleTX

Send letters and cards to the synagogue:

With gratitude and love,

The CBJ Clergy and Leadership
