SPONSOR A ROCKIN' SHABBAT DINNER
A letter from The Rockin’ Shabbat Committee - Gilah Abelson, Karin Bloom, Ora Chaiken, Gwen Solomon
Our monthly Rockin’ Shabbat dinner is one of our most successful community-building events, an entry point to our community for newcomers and an affordable luxury for many long-time Beth Jacob members.
The cost of providing the dinner exceeds the amount we are comfortable charging our members. The cost from our caterer has recently increased to $25 per adult, while we continue to charge $20 per adult. We also offer dinner at no charge to prospective members and to Beth Jacob staff and their families.
In hopes of continuing the dinner program in its current form without raising prices, we are asking people to consider “sponsoring” one Rockin’ Shabbat dinner a year. A minimum sponsorship donation of $360 will help bridge the gap between our income from the dinners and our costs, enabling us to keep the dinners affordable and to offer them at no cost to prospective members and to Beth Jacob staff. Sponsorship can mark an occasion such as an anniversary or birthday, and will be announced to the congregation unless you prefer to make an anonymous donation.
We are so grateful that the Chaiken family stepped up in January as our first Rockin’ Shabbat dinner sponsor, in honor of Sarina Chaiken’s Bat Mitzvah. Their dedication to our community is truly exemplary.
Consider sponsoring an upcoming Rockin’ Shabbat dinner.
Contact Gilah Abelson by email or at 650-345-1525 or Eric Stone by email or at 650-366-8481 to confirm arrangements.

KEPLER'S COMMUNITY PARTNERS PROGRAM
Congregation Beth Jacob is now a Community Partner at Kepler's!
Click on the logo to learn more and shop online.
Kepler's has a long tradition of supporting schools and non-profits in the community. They have created a program that provides meaningful support to the Partners throughout the year. Partner organizations get 10% back on any purchases their community members make at Kepler's. In 2008, Kepler's donated over $24,000 to partner schools, libraries and non-profits. This program is available all year round.
How it works:
-
Shop in the store. Simply mention Congregation Beth Jacob at the register when you check out. Kepler's will keep track of these purchases and send a benefit check to CBJ at the end of each quarter. If the donation is less than $50.00 they will hold the amount and include it in the next quarter’s check.
-
Shop online. Congregation Beth Jacob is now also on the Community Partners page of their website. People who shop online can click the “Shop Now” button next to Congregation Beth Jacob and Kepler's will include those online sales in the quarterly donations. This also lets CBJ extend the program to people who may not live near the store.
A note from Clark Kepler about Bob and Bob and efforts to expand their Judaica section:
Owned by a mother and daughter team, Bob and Bob Bookstore provided our community with fine Jewish gifts and books for 26 years. At Kepler's we could not hope to match the years of experience that the Bobs brought to their collection. After the closure of their store however, we understood there would be a section of our community left without the support and service that a lovingly cared for bookstore can provide. We knew we had to step up.
We reached out to Ellen Bob in the hope that she could guide us on how to begin to fill the void. We know this will take us time, but with her guidance, please know that we are working hard to learn, to listen and to invest heavily in what interests the Jewish community. Our staff is excited and eager to be working on this project.
EXPANDED CHILDREN'S SELECTION
Every day we are adding to our selection of books for children that focus on the rich traditions, holidays and stories of Jewish heritage. Please come in, take look and write to us about books you would like to see represented.
NEW JEWISH INTEREST SECTION
One of the things we have learned is that while we may actually have many books of interest, in a large store such as Kepler's they are often distributed throughout different sections in the store. We have created a wonderful space in which to bring those books together, to make connections, to entertain and to inspire. We've created a similar section on our website - you can find some titles online here.
GUEST REVIEWERS
We will be welcoming pieces from Guest Reviewers about titles of Jewish Interest. Look for these in the section. Click here to email submissions about current releases.
BOOK FAIRS
Kepler's has a wildly successful bookfair program that tailors inventory to each community. Our fairs are staffed by knowledgeable book specialists to help each person of any age find books they will love to read while raising funds for your organization. If you are interested, please click here to email a Kepler's staff member.
Thank you Kepler's for supporting the local Jewish community and non-profit organizations like CBJ!
