Through a generous grant from the Jim Joseph Foundation, facilitated by Norman Berkman, we
have been able to purchase 300 copies of Mahzor Lev Shalem, the new High Holy Day prayer book
recently published by the Rabbinical Assembly of the Conservative Movement.
This is a stunning book! It was composed and edited with a conscious awareness of the diverse
backgrounds of our congregants. The mahzor’s running commentary presents both a historical
overview and insight into the meaning of prayers. The translations capture the poetry and meaning
of the text, and there is also transliteration. I particularly love the stories, reflections, and poetry
that enrich the book’s interpretations. Each page contains gems. The layout and feel of the book are
beautiful, and I look forward to having it as my own companion for years to come. I know it will
touch your life and have a positive impact in our congregation.
We need 800 books in order to provide a book for each congregant during services. I ask you to buy
one book for yourself and one for the congregation. If you’re willing to purchase more, that would
be greatly appreciated. Each book will have a bookplate noting the donor.
My hope is that you will use the book before the High Holy Days, noting prayers and readings to
frame High Holy Day themes that touch you. These new mahzorim will add spiritual renewal to our
beautifully renovated building that you will soon enjoy. If you would like to see how the book is
laid out and the nature of the commentary, please visit www.rabbinicalassembly.org/mahzor.html.
There is also a YouTube book trailer at www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFkxoqlr264.
Please order through our office so that we can track the number of books. You can contact Cynthia
at the office (650-366-8481 or Cynthia@bethjacobrwc.org), or return the form on this page along
with your check made out to Congregation Beth Jacob.
